Clean Bus Report: An Overview of Clean Buses in Europe
Report publishing the results of an investigation into the development of clean bus fleets in Europe and beyond between 2017 and 2022. This report, compiled by the ASSURED project consortium, is based on survey results and provides interesting use-cases and some notes on the policy framework for clean bus adoption by public transport operators. Clean bus and alternative-fuel technologies and systems are defined and explained in detail. The bulk of the report outlines the results of a survey conducted among European public transport operators and cities and, in doing so, it provides an overview of changing bus fleet composition between 2017 and 2022. Case studies briefly mention some standout cities such as Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The wider global context of clean bus technology adoption is also provided via summaries of other global regions. The latter half of the report continues with a detailed overview of leading clean bus manufacturers and systems suppliers related to clean bus fleet deployment and operation.
Key learnings
- The European Commission Clean Bus Deployment Initiative (2017) funding mechanisms such as InvestEU & the Clean Bus Europe Platform (CEBP) have been vital to the successful rollout of clean buses in Europe.
- The total number of bus units has increased in cities by 19% from 2017-2021, the share of these that are diesel-free also increased from 15% to 23%.
- The number of cities with at least one battery-electric vehicle increased from 35 in 2017 to 71 in 2021.
